Default Vang' noob in need of help

hey guys, hope this is the right place if not please just move my thread. thanks

Ok, so i decided to start vang'in factions today. I am a Mes/N running a funked up version of discord. Now the first area I wanted to do was Sunqua Vale, and i have noticed it is easy as pie with discord. But my concern is, i do not think my build is strong enough to survive greater areas.

My build is
[skill]Discord[/skill][skill]necrosis[/skill][skill]Cry of pain[/skill][skill]Empathy[/skill][skill] Ether Feast[/skill][skill] Energy Tap[/skill] And [skill] Enfeebling Blood[/skill]

My Atts are
Death :12
Domination :10
Inspiration :9
Fast Casting :6
Curses :4

I have my Master of Whispers running a standard SS build to provide hexes and conditioning if I can't. Dunkoro running a mixture of WoH and condition/hex removal. And finally Souske running Double Dragon and other fire spells.

Like I said I have been smoothing along easily with this build, but I am concerned I won't survive long once I reach the mainland.

I would absolutely love comments and more importantly suggestions on how to kick ass with vanq'in.

Thanks!

You should and will eventually need to have 3 necro heroes running discord if that is the type of build you want to run. You do not need discord since you have necrosis. I would swap discord for another elite of your choosing. I also notice you only have 7 skills. What is your eighth? I would hope it is echo skill for COP. You may want to swap your discord for Echo so that you get twice as much out of COP. If you do that then you could also add You Move Like a Dwarf!, great skill to have on your bar.

As the area get harder you will need a greater damage output, this is where you will really like the 3 necro heroes running discord. You can then set them up as a N/RT healer, N/Mo protector, and a N/Rt MM bomber all spamming discord. They work great. Good luck

As a mesmer myself, I'd like to advocate the following build, which works wonders with Discord heroes...

http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Build:Me/N_Crying_Hexer

As a mesmer, running discord on bar seems in efficient, as you can't get your death magic attribute above 12, and you energy management will suck a bit. I used (and designed) the above bar to vanquish all of Cantha and all of Elona. I had to use a conset in exactly one zone to make it through, but that zone is reportedly a difficult one for any build... Tahnakai Temple (SP?).

If you do decide to go with the above build, you may want to vanquish the starting island of Elona first, just to rank up your sunspear levels. Good hunting!

As not every character has not finished the "A Meeting With the Emperor" quest....some of us had to vanquish Tahnnakai Temple the old-fashioned way.

Not everyone does the 'Meeting with the Emperor' trick. And even then, some people run the wrong way and trigger the Jade mobs and those groups and pack a punch in the small alleyways at the back of the temple.

Looks like someone picked it up too

To Hanging Man: What other hexes is your MoW running? Especially since you're only running one mesmer hex which I'm assuming you will be pinging [cry of pain] off. [Wastrel's Worry] might help, fast recharging and they'll probably take damage since you've interrupted the skill (I might be wrong, but I'm sorta sure [Wastrel's Worry] will still work as long as the skill doesn't complete before the hex ends, hence CoP's interrupt should ensure the hex works)

[visions of regret] works as well for more added fun to [spiteful spirit] and as the conditional hex for [cry of pain]?

I'd suggest also using Power Drain over Energy Tap.
[Power [email protected]] > [Energy [email protected]] gives more energy back and has better recharge time. Monsters in PVE tend to have large energy pools so the loss of 6 energy has minimal effect on them. Jade Brotherhood Mages (Dragon's Stomp), Temple Guardians (Smoldering Embers and Breath of Fire) and Jade Brotherhood Ritualist (Channeled Strike) make for some easy targets for Power Drain.

And I too recommend taking Archane Echo for [Cry of Pain] and [Visions of Regret] is a better choice of Elite Skill if you're taking Team Discord with you.

You could also use [Ether Nightmare] for your [Cry of Pain] conditional hex.

If you are still having troubles, give me a shout in game and I'll drop off 3 Necro Heroes for your use in the vanquish. US East Coast and my IGN is on the left.

This team build works incredibly well:

ok back on topic...

as a mesmer your attribute points are spread a bit thin to be very effective. you should really leave the discords to the necros. not sure about that build that bulldozer posted because i didn't look it up. but i'm thinking something like [[assassins promise] should work well for a mesmer with an interrupt or two, namely [[cry of pain] and [[cry of frustration] along with a mesmer hex or two, [[finish him] and/or [[you move lik], [[ether nightmare], yada, yada, yada...

to run discord, you should be using 3 necro heros each of whom have [[discord] in their bar. one minion master, one healer and maybe one curses depending on the area you're in.

for 4 man areas maybe something like:

nec 1: [discord][animate bone min][animate shamb][death nova][blood of the master][foul feast][infuse condition][dwayna's sorr]
nec 2: [discord][animate shamb][life][protective was][spirit light][mend body and soul][signet of lost][flesh of my flesh]
nec 3: [discord][animate shamb][aegis][reversal of fort][remove hex][protective spir][resurrection chant][signet of lost]

basically, it's your job to call the target and apply the conditions and hexes for the necros to use their discords, because if you don't do it, it won't get done properly. for 8 man areas, you can drop the monk skills on nec 3 and add in things like [[barbs], [[mark of pain], [[shadow of fear], [[enfeebling blood], [[weaken armor], etc... then you can bring the monk henchies and some extra damage dealers. you also don't really need everyone to carry animate shambling horror but they cause conditions and since you're not running [[jagged bones] it makes it a little tougher to run out of minions.

anyway, just my thoughts. i'm sure some will disagree with me but i do something like this with my monk and it's fairly effective.

for you i would reccommend running the discordway.

Wiki gives a good explanation so i'll save you from my terrible english and spelling mistakes

http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Build:Team_-_Discord_Spam
^ Ive been using that for all the VQs ive done up to date. Once you get a real feel for the build and the technique of playing you will breeze through every VQ.

Tips:
1.Bring AoE hexs + conditions. This build needs to make kills quickly if it is to be successful. and to do that you need both a hex and a condition on the target. when fighting foes like the jade brotherhood i would reccommend bringing big aoe hexs so they can waste there hex removal skill on the 'non spike hexs'.

2.Don't forget the Ebon vanguard sin if u choose to use him uses [skill] iron palm [/skill] with this and [skill] You Move Like A Dwarf [/skill] you can keep the target KD'd until it dies. this is a extreamly useful so good timing with the KD skills is important.

3. Beware skills such as.... [skill] Reverse Hex [/skill] [skill] Expel Hexes [/skill] [skill] Peace and Harmony [/skill]
You should be able to catch most hex removal skills with [skill] You Move Like A Dwarf [/skill] however the above skills are the ones that have caused me the most grief
good luck if u have anymore questions about discordway pm me on forum or ingame (or post here ofc)
as a caster you really should condsider running discord imo its the best option. the 'Sabway' imo is more melee/para/ranger friendly

As others have indicated, I didn't use the 2 foe vanquish trick. I thought about it, but got tired of trying to find someone who had the quest to join my party. Also, I consider such tricks more or less exploits and as such do not usually enjoy using them.

Without using this trick, the back stairway in Tahnakai temple is a nightmare. Thanks to the game's lack of depth perception, three mobs on the stairway can interrupt you, dragon stomp you, remove your hexes, and occasionally hit you with triple chop all before you are physically anywhere near them, i.e. your minions can't help you. While this may not be an issue for all vanquish teams (I had little to no problem with in on my Paragon for example) the discord team finds it hard to deal with.

Rather than trolling making idiot comments, why not consider the fact that I was describing a weakness of my recommendation for any (and I can see there are others) who don't go for the 2 foe vanquish. I mean, seriously. What have you proven by vanquishing an area by killing one or 2 foes only? The OP's question was about what might or might not work for high level areas, and my comment was relevant to that topic. Yours jackinthe was not.

Excellent thanks to everyone who posted with help, i seriously appreciate all your feedback

Ok I probably should have mentioned that I only have the 3 campaigns, not Eotn. So I can't run the discordway. I have MoW and olias as necro heroes.

ok my Mow skill set up is OAhkYgHcoIqTe4QMG2d2BMWVN5C
My Souske ele set up is OghjowMc4M4ih4vYsWWbaEjkLA
And Dunkoro set up is Owgl0kOzTCxhxoRorbk8aOxlASSu

I have not used Olias because he is only lvl 17 but in the process of lvling him up quickly

Ok so I figure I'd run the discord way to provide fast damage since I wanted my MoW to be providing more of the hexes/conditions

Now I looked at the link someone posted [sorry forgot name xD] with Lyssa's Aura and Necrosis, which i like because I have been using Lyssa's for a while and its awesome, so ill have to give it a try.

now when I have Olias and MoW @ lvl 20, keep in mind I don't have and wont have EotN, can someone provide a nice build? I want to try and make Olias into a MM, i dont got [skill]jagged Bones[/skill] but i think I can put together a nice MM build.

If you don't have 3 necro heroes, you can still run a form of discord way. I'd suggest using the first 2 discord heroes listed on the PvX page. As for the third there are a variety of options to simulate the remaining bar. You could bring a Mo/N instead and run basically the same skills for example. The problem there would be energy management most likely, not to mention the fact that your discord and Death novas would do a bit less damage. You'd probably want to rearrange your attributes to make it work out. Or, you could put Death nova on one of the other heroes, maybe taking the enchant stripping skill off and running a Mo/Me with some enchantment stripping and energy management to compensate. Honestly, I found that while vanquishing with the above bar, I usually had more than enough damage from CoP, Necrosis and Overload (especially with high lvl empathy/backfire) to kill most things fast without waiting for the discorders to do a lot. Armor ignoring damage is pretty damn effective in Hard mode.

Anyway, just some suggestions. Good luck and let usknow how it turns out.
